Honors Scholars Gain Experience Presenting Research Beyond the Classroom

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥敵扇耸悠 Honors Program students recently showcased their scholarship at the Southern Regional Honors Conference (SRHC), held in Montgomery, Ala. The annual conference brought together over 700 high-achieving students, along with faculty, and administrators from across the southern United States for three days of research presentations, workshops, and networking opportunities. More than 300 students and faculty shared their research through posters or podium presentations at the event.

鈥淗onors is more than coursework and thesis publications,鈥 noted Director of University Honors and Assistant Professor of Physics Dr. Wilson Hawkins. 鈥淭hrough conference travel our students build research projects, present to their peers, and network with other universities. Stepping out of your comfort zone, exploring new places, meeting new people, and building your resume is what it鈥檚 all about! I couldn鈥檛 be more proud of our students!鈥

Hosted by the Southern Regional Honors Council, the conference serves honors programs in 11 states and is the council鈥檚 signature event. The conference is distinctive in its student-centered focus, featuring original research and creative work across disciplines including STEM, social sciences, business, humanities, and the arts.

On the first day of the conference, the students toured Montgomery and learned about the historic city through a four-hour walking program called, 鈥淐ity as Text.鈥 They were guided through confederate and slave trade monuments, slave trade river ports, museums, etc. This included the Rosa Parks memorial, the Rosa Parks Museum, the first Confederate States of America Capital monuments and buildings, and The Legacy Museum.

The 成人视频 Honors Students took a walking tour of Montgomery, Ala.

On the second and third days, students attended the Graduate School Fair to network and learn about the programs offered at several graduate schools. Also on these days, students presented their research.

Among the student presenters was Abigail Lauerman of Fort Mill, S.C. A junior double majoring in psychology and theatre, she presented her poster, 鈥淐reative Pathways to Mental Health: The Importance of Music and Art Therapy.鈥 Lauerman鈥檚 research examined how these therapies can improve emotional resilience, reduce anxiety, and support overall mental health across different populations.

鈥淚 chose my research topic, because I am very interested in mental health and creative ways to support emotional well-being,鈥 Lauerman related. 鈥淎s someone who hopes to work with children as a child life specialist, I was especially drawn to music and art therapy because they offer nonverbal ways for individuals to express themselves.鈥

Lauerman said the opportunities she鈥檚 experienced in the 成人视频 Honors Program played a key role in preparing her to present at the academic conference. 鈥淏eing in the Honors Program has allowed me to challenge myself academically and grow as a student,鈥 she asserted. 鈥淧resenting my research helped me build confidence in public speaking, improve my communication skills, and connect with others who share similar academic interests.鈥

She also reflected on the supportive environment at 成人视频 and her involvement in the Honors Program. 鈥淢y experience at 成人视频 and in the Honors Program has been very rewarding,鈥 Lauerman said. 鈥淭he conference was a great opportunity to showcase my work and gain a deeper appreciation for the research process. I鈥檝e felt encouraged to step outside of my comfort zone, and I鈥檝e really enjoyed serving as the publicist for the Honors Program.鈥

Hannah White, a junior chemistry major from Bluefield, Va., presented 鈥淴-Ray Fluorescence Spectrometry as a Non-Destructive Analysis Method of American Artifacts.鈥 Her research examined how X-ray fluorescence spectrometry can identify the elemental composition of artifacts, such as arrowheads, without damaging them.

鈥淧reservation of artifacts and forensic evidence is important,鈥 White explained. 鈥淴-ray fluorescence spectrometry is a non-destructive method of analysis. I chose this topic because I am interested in forensic science and new ideas for how to preserve evidence collected at crime scenes.鈥

She added that her project strengthened her interest in forensic science and future research. White said she values the professional experience and networking opportunities gained through participating in the Honors Conference.

Bella Harding Honors Conference
Bella Harding presented her research on Morphea Skin
Disease.

Another chemistry student, Taylor Sollie, a junior from Waynesville, N.C., presented 鈥淓xploration of Infrared Spectroscopy as a Potential Method to Identify Trace Evidence as Nail Polish.鈥 Sollie, who is majoring in chemistry with minors in biology and forensic science, tested infrared spectroscopy as a tool for identifying paint samples found at crime scenes.

鈥淚 chose this topic because I want to be a forensic chemist,鈥 she stated. 鈥淚 learned that the 16 nail polishes I tested鈥攁 variety of brands and kinds鈥攑roduced almost the exact same spectra. This showed that if an unknown paint chip is found, it can easily be identified as nail polish because it has a distinct spectrum.鈥

Emmy Bowen, a junior psychology and sociology major from Boiling Springs, presented research titled 鈥淐hildren and Divorce: What You Should Know.鈥 Her work focused on the psychological and sociological effects of post-divorce environments on children and highlighted potential interventions to support well-being.

鈥淭his topic doesn鈥檛 have a lot of research, even though a huge portion of the U.S. population is affected by it,鈥 Bowen observed. 鈥淚 wanted people to know about interventions and things that could possibly help children through a difficult time.鈥

Hodges McCeathern honors
Hodges McCathern was invited to share his research in
a podium presentation.

In the STEM and health sciences category, Hodges McCathern, a junior biochemistry major from Lexington, S.C., presented research connected to his honors thesis titled 鈥淓nvironmental Fate of DDT and Implications for Neurological Health.鈥 His work explores a potential link between exposure to DDT鈥攁 pesticide widely used during World War II鈥攁nd increased risk of Parkinson鈥檚 disease.

鈥淢y hope is that my research can help raise awareness about this issue and promote further study into the long-term effects of DDT and the causes of Parkinson鈥檚 disease,鈥 McCathern said.

Reflecting on his experience in Honors, he added, 鈥淭hrough the Honors Program, I have presented research at conferences from coast to coast. Getting to interact with people who are as passionate about their research as I am has been eye-opening and has helped me become more confident as I begin applying to medical school.鈥

By presenting research beyond the classroom, Gardner鈥慦ebb Honors students gained hands鈥憃n experience that complements their academic studies and reflects the University鈥檚 mission to equip students with the knowledge, confidence, and purpose needed to lead and serve in a rapidly changing world.

2012 Alumna Built a Career That Blends Pharmacy Expertise with a Passion for Helping Patients and Students Thrive

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥擠r. Evan Moffitt Drake, 鈥12, of Fletcher, N.C., was nearing the end of her freshman year at Gardner鈥慦ebb University when a conversation with her volleyball teammate nudged her toward an unexpected future. Her teammate shared that her goal was to become a pharmacist, and she planned to major in chemistry to get started. Drake had always liked math and science, but she knew little about the pharmacy field.

evan drake sciences alumni outcome

鈥淚 looked into pharmacy and then chemistry, and I talked to the 成人视频 faculty,鈥 Drake told a group of GWU students during a recent visit to campus. Her presentation was part of the Applications of Chemistry Seminar Series, hosted by the Department of Natural Sciences.

After those conversations with professors, she chose chemistry as her major. Drake also took a job at a pharmacy to see the profession up close and discovered she genuinely enjoyed the work. 鈥淚 liked the science,鈥 she recalled, 鈥渂ut I also realized how much I enjoyed interacting with patients.鈥 That early exposure set her on the path that would eventually lead to pharmacy school, clinical practice, teaching, and research.

鈥湷扇耸悠 was the jumping board for me,鈥 Drake noted. 鈥淗ere鈥檚 where I learned what I wanted to do. Here鈥檚 where I started the pursuit. I went into pharmacy school with the knowledge I needed. I felt prepared walking in, a lot more than some of my classmates did.鈥

Her academic preparation went beyond learning chemistry. The GWU faculty had already taught her how to work at a graduate鈥憇chool pace. 鈥淭hey challenged me; they taught me at a high level, but they expected me to perform at a high level,鈥 Drake said. 鈥淪ometimes that felt really daunting, and it was really hard. I hadn’t been challenged like that before. Some of my classmates had an easy undergrad, so to speak. They got a big wake-up call in pharmacy school when they had to study at night, study on weekends, do study groups, extra projects.鈥

Drake honed her study habits with the help of 成人视频 professors. 鈥淚 learned to be more studious; I learned to be diligent,鈥 she reflected. 鈥淚 was able to grow in my discipline and organizational traits. So, you are getting prepared here. I can promise you that. You put your part in; they do their part.鈥

Another strength of the Gardner鈥慦ebb environment is the faculty鈥檚 approachability. 鈥淚 learned it’s OK to ask questions here, because they made it a safe place for me to ask questions,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 was able to ask things that I didn’t understand, and I felt comfortable doing that.鈥

That same spirit now informs Drake鈥檚 teaching as an assistant professor in the Wingate School of Pharmacy, where she earned her PharmD in 2016. Her position also includes serving as a clinical pharmacist at St. Luke鈥檚 Hospital in Columbus, N.C. 鈥淚t’s common in pharmacy education to be employed by the university, but placed in a clinic or hospital,鈥 she explained. 鈥淵ou serve patients a few days a week and then teach a few days a week. Pharmacists are needed everywhere as part of a whole team and team-based approach to patient care. When I first went to pharmacy school, I thought I’d be working at a CVS or in the basement of a hospital. But it is so much more than that. There is a plethora of opportunities with a pharmacy degree.鈥

At St. Luke鈥檚, Drake serves as an ambulatory care pharmacist, caring for patients who walk into the office for help managing chronic conditions. 鈥淲hen they are diagnosed with a chronic disease and they need help managing that or a lot of education, they’re referred to me,鈥 she explained. 鈥淪o, things to think about would be like diabetes, high blood pressure, bone loss or osteoporosis, depression, or heart failure.鈥

Working with patients one-on-one deepened her sense of calling. 鈥淚 love having time with my patients,鈥 she said. 鈥淎 lot of them are older adults or veterans. Hearing their stories, building trust鈥攖hose relationships matter. Helping someone improve their health over months or years is incredibly meaningful work.鈥

Dr Evan M Drake Chemistry Alumna copy

In North Carolina, pharmacists can obtain a prescribing license. Working in collaboration with a supervising physician, Drake can adjust medications, order labs, and help manage treatment plans. In rural areas, where physicians are few, an ambulatory care pharmacist can dramatically support patient access and lighten the physician鈥檚 load. For Drake, it鈥檚 a way of ensuring patients get the attention, education, and follow鈥憉p they need. 鈥淪ometimes it鈥檚 just explaining what a number means or how a medication works,鈥 she said. 鈥淭hose five minutes of education can change the trajectory of someone鈥檚 health.鈥

Another part of Drake鈥檚 teaching position is conducting research, something she once thought would be too overwhelming. But through collaboration with her colleagues, she has found that she enjoys the challenge and is energized by exploring questions that directly affect patients and student pharmacists. She鈥檚 co鈥慳uthored studies including 鈥淏uilding and Testing a Team-Based Care Model in Primary Care: The Heart鈥2鈥慔eart Blood Pressure Control Partners Study鈥 and 鈥淕eographic Disparities in Glucagon Prescriptions Across North Carolina.鈥 Her work focuses on improving patient care, strengthening rural health outcomes, and understanding how students grow in clinical settings.

From her days as a student鈥慳thlete discovering a new career path to her current work as a teacher, researcher, and clinician, Drake鈥檚 journey reflects a commitment to service shaped by her time at Gardner鈥慦ebb. Whether she鈥檚 helping a patient understand a chronic condition, mentoring a pharmacy student, or researching ways to improve health outcomes across North Carolina, her work is rooted in compassion and connection. 鈥淵ou don鈥檛 have to be just one thing,鈥 she told students. 鈥淵ou can help people in so many ways.鈥

Guidance from Searight PACE Leadership Program Helped Issa Cogdell Access National Networks and Career Pathways

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥擶hen Issa Cogdell arrived at 成人视频 in 2023, he discovered a community ready to champion his goals. Friends, professors, staff members, and mentors encouraged him to grow personally and professionally. Drawing on the technical, communication, and problem鈥憇olving skills he developed at Gardner鈥慦ebb, the rising senior has earned a prestigious internship in New York with Bloomberg, a global leader in financial technology, data, analytics, and media.

Issa Codgell in San Francisco
Issa Cogdell attended the Management and
Leadership for Tomorrow (MLT) Tech Trek in
San Francisco last summer, an experience
that set the stage for his Bloomberg
Internship.

The path to this competitive role started with his participation in the Searight Professional and Continuing Education (PACE) Leadership Certificate Program, led by Dr. Anthony Negbenebor and program founder the Rev. Johnny Searight. They introduced him to the Management and Leadership for Tomorrow (MLT) Career Prep Class of 2027, opening the door for him to apply and be selected for the MLT Tech Trek in San Francisco last summer鈥攁n experience that set the stage for the Bloomberg opportunity.

Cogdell described the MLT Tech Trek as an amazing experience. 鈥淚 was able to explore the Bloomberg San Francisco office and connect with recruiters and professionals from Deloitte, BlackRock, Autodesk, TikTok and Dell,鈥 he reflected. 鈥淚t was a pleasure to meet and engage with all these companies to see the ways I could prepare, engage and improve myself professionally.鈥

As a member of the MLT Career Prep Class, Cogdell has access to an internship portal, which he used to apply for a position at Bloomberg. Soon after, Bloomberg recruiters reached out to him directly, encouraging him to apply for a technical support role they felt better matched his strengths. Following a virtual meeting, the company flew him to New York for a face-to-face interview and tour of the Bloomberg Lexington Avenue office. After another follow-up conversation, he received the offer.

鈥淚 felt extremely grateful to be chosen, knowing all my hard work paid off,鈥 Codgell shared. 鈥淚 was happy that I’d be going to a company with great culture like Bloomberg where philanthropy is a big part.鈥

Negbenebor noted that Cogdell is the first student from 成人视频 to receive an internship offer from Bloomberg. 鈥淚 have known Issa for some time, and he is a man of impeccable character, a great Christian, and a person committed to the goals of higher education and Christian ethics,鈥 Negbenebor stated. 鈥淗e is one of our most active Searight PACE leadership students. His leadership skills, initiative, commitment and creativity are truly exceptional. He is focused on his discipline and searching for ways to impact the world around him. He loves assisting others and is an asset to GWU.鈥

As an intern, Cogdell will learn to use the Bloomberg Terminal, gaining experience with industry鈥憀eading financial data, analytics, news, and trading tools. He will also provide internal technical support and help diagnose issues related to the Terminal.

Searight PACE Leadership Certificate Program at a
community event.

A winner of the Ignite Scholarship, Cogdell credits his 成人视频 journey for shaping his readiness and confidence. 鈥淭he experience at 成人视频 has contributed to my success in many ways,鈥 he reflected. 鈥淭he first being around like-minded people, my friends, who have the same goals to succeed as me. Along with that, having professors and alumni who have helped me get into positions to succeed like Dr. Negbenebor and Reverend Searight, who introduced me to MLT, which has brought me amazing connections and lifelong friends.鈥

Through his coursework, Cogdell said the faculty and hands鈥憃n learning strengthened his technical foundation. Assistant Professor Oscar Gonzalez and Professor Dr. Mirek Mystkowski helped him understand core concepts in mathematics, computer science and cybersecurity.

His campus work experience also played a key role. Cogdell shared that working in the 成人视频 IT department gave him practical, real鈥憌orld skills. He expressed appreciation for the staff who supervised and trained him, noting that the helpdesk coordinator, Diancil Chavez, network technician, Chanae Pickett, and Associate Vice President of Information Technology & Chief Information Officer Ray Curtis offered mentorship and opportunities to build confidence in diagnosing and solving technology issues.

Looking ahead, Cogdell is eager to represent 成人视频 on a national stage and bring his experiences back to campus.

Students Apply University Values to Real鈥慦orld Ethical Dilemmas at North Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities (NCICU) Competition

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥擥ardner鈥慦ebb University鈥檚 Ethics Bowl team delivered a standout performance at the 15th Annual North Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities (NCICU) Ethics Bowl. They earned three victories in four rounds while showcasing disciplined preparation and mission鈥慶entered ethical reasoning.

ethics bowl

The event brought together 17 student teams for two days of arguments, and resulted in a historic victory for Johnson C. Smith University as the first Historically Black College/University (HBCU) to prevail as champion. The competition centered on the theme, 鈥淓thics in Leadership,鈥 and the GWU students argued their positions on the topics of corporate responsibility, Olympics, atomic bomb, and funding for public schools.

成人视频鈥檚 six-member team is advised by Dr. Anna Sieges鈥態eal, associate professor in the Department of Religious Studies and Philosophy, and Dr. Shea Stuart, professor of English. 鈥淲e represented GWU well as our ethical framework is based on the University鈥檚 motto 鈥榩ro Deo et Humanitate,鈥欌 Sieges-Beal stated. 鈥淲e evaluate ethical situations according to the principles of life, goodness, justice, and truth telling.鈥

The team was also supported by Kalem Griffin, a 2025 alumnus from Thomasville, N.C., who competed last year. A graduate student in 成人视频鈥檚 Master of Sport Management program, he provided valuable insight and support to the team throughout the competition. Between rounds, Griffin encouraged the team to remain confident, keep their presentation direct, and stay positive. 鈥淚t was fascinating to be introduced to this year鈥檚 Ethics and Leadership cases at the Ethics Bowl for the first time, and I was highly impressed by how the team had prepared for and handled them,鈥 Griffin praised. 鈥淎s always, our team was exceptional, consistently showing noticeable growth and improvement through each round, and generally being one of the best-performing teams in the entire event.鈥

ethics bowl

成人视频 began preparing for the event in October 2024 by researching nine cases. They don鈥檛 find out the topics they will be arguing until the competition. They faced students from William Peace University, Montreat College, Salem College and the University of Mount Olive.

Junior Maeve McGinley commented on how rewarding it was to see all the months of preparation come together in real time. 鈥淓ven when I was nervous, I felt proud of how our team approached cases with humility and intellectual honesty rather than just trying to win,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 appreciated how we sharpened one another鈥檚 arguments, challenged each other respectfully, and built responses that were stronger because they were communal. It also built a real sense of camaraderie.鈥

Alaena Locklear, a sophomore, said being at the actual competition was a relief after spending so much time working on the cases. 鈥淭he nerves settled after the first round, and as a team, our concentration shifted to improving after every debate and strengthening our weak points,鈥 she noted. 鈥淚 think the best part of being on the team was how strong our teamwork was. Every judge we talked to said wonderful things about how well we worked together, and it really came through in the debates we won.鈥

ethics bowl

Junior Hodges McCathern agreed with his teammate. 鈥淚t was great to be surrounded by such talented and intelligent people; they make things easy,鈥 he asserted. 鈥淕reat teams have confidence in each other, know their roles to play, and trust that each person will do their job. I know that I have five teammates I can confidently say are capable of tackling any challenge they may face. I am very thankful for this experience these past two years.鈥

Issa Cogdell, also a junior, has enjoyed participating in debate competitions since high school. 鈥淚t was amazing to compete after all the preparation, because you’re able to practice your stance and defend it in real time,鈥 he said. 鈥淭he best part of being on the team is seeing everyone’s individual strengths shine throughout the preparation period and during the Ethics Bowl itself.鈥

ethics bowl

Initially, sophomore Sophie Boss didn鈥檛 know what the commitment involved, but she embraced the opportunity and found the experience deeply rewarding. 鈥淚t was unlike anything I had ever done before鈥攕uch an amazing experience that I would definitely do it again,鈥 Boss affirmed. 鈥淭he most beneficial thing I learned from this event was how important public speaking skills are, as well as how ethics are part of everyday life more than we think. Every conversation can be an ethical conversation, and it is cool to see things from a new perspective now. I would recommend this to everyone to get out of their comfort zone and participate in something like this that will stretch their minds. 鈥

Brock Nikkari, a senior, competed for the second year in a row. 鈥淭he best part of being on the team is spending time with my friends and representing Gardner鈥慦ebb University,鈥 Nikkari stated. 鈥淭he most beneficial thing I learned was how to convey my thoughts in a professional and orderly manner. I have found the Ethics Bowl has greatly helped my public speaking skills.鈥

ethics bowl

The team鈥檚 accomplishment highlights the depth of talent at 成人视频 and underscores the value of experiential learning and the power of teamwork. McGinley summed up the lasting impact of the opportunity. 鈥淓thics Bowl requires you to make a clear claim, defend it with reasoning, and respond to critiques without becoming defensive,鈥 she observed. 鈥淚 learned how important it is to listen carefully, acknowledge strong points from opposing teams, and refine my thinking on the spot. That skill feels incredibly transferable to both academic work and future vocational settings.鈥

Team Roster

  • Maeve McGinley 鈥 Chapin, S.C., psychology and Christian studies with a concentration in discipleship.
  • Alaena Locklear 鈥 Lawndale, N.C., accounting.
  • Hodges McCathern 鈥 Lexington, S.C., biochemistry.
  • Issa Cogdell 鈥 Winston鈥慡alem, N.C., computer science.
  • Sophie Boss 鈥 Melbourne, Fla., elementary education.
  • Brock Nikkari 鈥 Milton, Fla., Christian studies with a concentration in biblical studies.

Ethics Bowl Sponsors

The success of the 2026 Ethics Bowl was made possible by the Independent College Fund of North Carolina (ICFNC), the fundraising arm of NCICU, which raised almost $80,000 in sponsorships. Gardner鈥慦ebb鈥檚 2026 team participation was made possible in part by sponsorship from Fortinet and NFP.

Other sponsors included: Aramark, BHDP, The Budd Group, Coca-Cola Consolidated, Cherry Bekaert, The Council of Independent Colleges, CPL, Duke Energy, French Broad Electric, Guilford College Center for Principled Problem Solving, Huntington National Bank, IMA Financial Group, Jesse and Kay McCartney, Mt. Dr. Aaron Rice: The GWU Department of Music鈥擳he North Carolina Destination

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥敵扇耸悠碘檚 Department of Music is experiencing a season of bold growth and vision under the leadership of Dr. Aaron Rice, associate professor and department chair. Since arriving in 2022, Rice has helped boost enrollment by 30 percent and expanded student opportunities across North Carolina and beyond.

In recognition of his efforts, Rice has been named the recipient of the 2025鈥2026 Rising Star Award, an honor given by the Faculty Development of Instruction and Improvement Committee. The award recognizes emerging excellence in teaching, leadership and scholarship.

鈥淚鈥檓 incredibly honored and grateful,鈥 Rice reflected. 鈥淚t encourages me to continue to invest and do all the things that I love. We want to be the strongest music unit at a Christian institution within North Carolina.鈥

A native of Gastonia, N.C., Rice felt a calling to ministry early in life and initially focused on contemporary worship music. But his love for choral music was rekindled during college, leading him to pursue graduate work at East Carolina University and Southwestern Seminary.

Rice鈥檚 leadership has already made a regional impact. 成人视频鈥檚 choral workshops have grown to include elementary school students, giving young musicians access to college-level instruction and performance experiences. University ensembles have performed at the North Carolina Choral Directors Association conference and Charlotte鈥檚 Thanksgiving Eve Parade.

鈥淪eventy percent of our students are from within a 100-mile radius,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 think we鈥檙e strategically positioned to have an outsized impact on Gaston, Lincoln, Cleveland, Rutherford, Caldwell, Catawba鈥攁ll those counties. We鈥檙e ready to do it, and we are doing it.鈥

Rice is also preparing students for national and international opportunities. He helped lead a performance trip to France in 2024 and is raising funds for a 2027 trip to New Orleans. He has helped secure resources to open a digital piano lab and to fund research to support future church musicians.

鈥淗onestly, I want to make sure the things that we’re doing are great,鈥 he said. 鈥淲e want to see our ensembles performing at conferences. As we continue to get better and better students, we’re watching them grow and thrive and do well. We’re going to see them end up performing on these big stages. As soon as they graduate, we want to make sure that these students are No. 1, getting placed, and then they鈥檙e out there, crushing it. We want to see them doing exceedingly well.鈥

Students Reflect on Resilience, Representation, and the Ongoing Impact of Black Culture

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥擳he 成人视频 Black Student Association (BSA) is sponsoring a spirit week and several events to highlight African American culture and heritage. Shiasia Jefferies, BSA president, explains why February is the perfect month to honor Black History. Along with BSA, the Office of Campus Unity and Connection is sponsoring two programs. Learn more here.

鈥淔ebruary, often referred to as the 鈥榤onth of love,鈥 offers a meaningful opportunity to reconnect with our roots and honor the traditions we continue to cherish, despite the hardships our ancestors endured,鈥 Jefferies noted. 鈥淭his month gives us the space to educate, celebrate, and inspire others to understand the depth of Black history. I believe Black History Month goes far beyond simply acknowledging that we are no longer in bondage; it is about recognizing resilience, contributions, and the ongoing impact of Black culture.鈥

The BSA Vice President Naliah Codjovi shared that Black History Month reminds her how much strength can be found in unity and perseverance. 鈥淏lack History Month allows me to dedicate time to learn about and be inspired by figures who created great changes in the world, even when the world was against them,鈥 she related.

BSA Spirit week

Codjovi, of Charlotte, N.C., is an Ignite Scholar at 成人视频, an award that includes full tuition to the University. A biology major with a biomedical concentration and a minor in health administration, her goal is to become a Physician Assistant and enter the field of hematology. She appreciates all those who have led the way into the field of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM).

鈥淚鈥檝e been very inspired by people of color in science,鈥 she shared. 鈥淚鈥檝e been seeing a lot of news about black inventors. I love hearing and seeing people of color in STEM. Growing up interested in STEM, I鈥檝e definitely found myself being the only black girl in the room. I didn鈥檛 see people who look like me in these roles, but lately I have had black doctors and black professors and they remind me that in a world that tries to doubt us and hold us back, we can still come out on top and pave the way for those behind us.鈥

Jefferies is a senior sociology major from Hickory, N.C. She is also inspired by the number of African American inventions that are still used today and points out other contributions to society. 鈥淎nother powerful expression of Black culture can be seen in the way we wear our hair and dress, which has influenced and inspired people across many different racial and cultural backgrounds,鈥 she acknowledged. 鈥淢usic is also especially meaningful to me, as the soul, emotion, and deeper messages behind many Black songs are incredibly moving and reflective of our shared experiences.鈥

Jefferies and Codjovi said BSA planned its celebration of Black History Month to educate and foster connection. 鈥淓ven within our own community, some people have limited understanding of what Black history is meant to represent,鈥 Jefferies stated. 鈥淯ltimately, we aim to bring everyone together, as our events are not just for Black students on campus but for the entire community.鈥

Jefferies concluded, 鈥淏lack History Month and the Black Student Association represent more than a celebration of the past; they are spaces for growth, education, and community building. They provide opportunities for meaningful conversations, shared experiences, and continued learning that extend beyond a single month. Through BSA, students are encouraged to engage with Black history and culture in ways that promote understanding, empowerment, and unity across the campus community.鈥

Programs, Library Display, and Black Student Association Events Spotlight Black Voices, Identity, and Resilience

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥擳he observance of Black History Month at Gardner鈥慦ebb University features a series of events and initiatives designed to connect the campus community to the past, celebrate the present, and strengthen relationships. The Office of Campus Unity and Connection, the Black Student Association (BSA), and Dover Library are collaborating to highlight the rich history, culture, and creative contributions of Black Americans.

Library black history month

Dover Library

成人视频 Instruction Librarian Katie Hartley has curated a special display featuring new releases from African American authors. She designed the exhibit to showcase a range of voices, spotlighting both emerging writers and well鈥慿nown authors. The goal, she explained, is to give patrons an opportunity to explore diverse perspectives and perhaps discover a new favorite book.

BSA Spirit Week and Events

The Black Student Association is also leading the campus in celebration through Black History Month Spirit Week, held Feb. 9鈥13, and hosting other events throughout the month. Read more about their events here.

Office of Campus Unity and Connection

Jessika Raduly, director of Campus Unity and Connection, said understanding history is foundational to building a stronger community. 鈥淐elebrating Black History Month at 成人视频 is more than learning about history; it is about applying that knowledge to build a more unified and empathetic student body in the present. When students engage with the stories, struggles, and triumphs of Black history makers, they create a shared language of resilience that resonates across all backgrounds.鈥

Campus Unity and Connection is offering two additional programs that invite students to explore identity and perseverance through storytelling. Graduate student Alexis Wideman, who helped plan the events, says each one provides space for connection and reflection. Refreshments will be available at both programs while supplies last.

Quilt Square Black History Month

The first event on Feb. 16, 鈥淭he Story We Tell,鈥 will invite participants to create their own quilt square鈥攏o sewing required. Guest speaker, Dr. Simone McIntyre, assistant professor in the Department of Counselor Education, will discuss 鈥淪titches, Strength, and Stories: Honoring Black History Month.鈥 Inspired by the historic significance of quilting in Black communities, this event encourages students to express aspects of their identity, culture, and heritage. The completed squares will later be displayed in Tucker Student Center.

鈥淔or enslaved Black Americans, quilts served not only as a pathway to freedom but also as a powerful way to tell and preserve history within their familial roots,鈥 Wideman explained. 鈥淭his event allows participants to create and share the story they want to tell about who they are, so that each time they pass by the display, they can see their personalized quilt square and be reminded of their identity and story.鈥

Movie poster Black History Month

The celebration continues on Feb. 19 with a movie night featuring 鈥淗arriet,鈥 the acclaimed 2019 film starring Cynthia Erivo. The biographical drama highlights Harriet Tubman鈥檚 courage, leadership, and enduring impact on the fight for justice. Wideman describes Tubman as a symbol of resilience and conviction. She described, 鈥淗arriet Tubman demonstrates how faith in God can make the impossible possible. This film also sheds light on the history of slavery and the daily hardships endured by enslaved Black Americans. Regardless of how painful or difficult this history may be, it should never be forgotten, as it shows how resilience in the face of hate and ignorance continues to flow through the veins of Black Americans.鈥

Together, these programs invite the Gardner鈥慦ebb community to honor Black history in meaningful, multifaceted ways throughout the month of February.
