Investiture Ceremony Affirms Christ鈥慍entered Mission and Shared Vision for the University鈥檚 Future

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥敵扇耸悠碘檚 14th president, Nathaniel J. Evans, was formally sworn into his office on April 24, 2026. The program was held at 10:15 a.m. in Lutz-Yelton Convocation Center. Board of Trustees Chair the Rev. Dr. M. Lamont Littlejohn Jr. presided over the investiture ceremony.

鈥淭oday, we gather as a community of faith, learning, and service,鈥 Littlejohn stated. 鈥淲e are confident that the leadership being installed today will continue to strengthen the legacy of 成人视频鈥攂uilding upon the foundation laid by those who have served before, while guiding this institution toward new opportunities for growth, innovation, and impact.鈥

Evans officially took office at 成人视频 on Nov. 11, 2025, after a competitive national search led by Littlejohn. 鈥淚t was my pleasure to serve as the chair of the Presidential Search Committee,鈥 he reflected. 鈥淚 am grateful to that committee for their hard work and dedication to the process of finding a new president to lead our beloved institution.鈥

Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Nicole Waters welcomed attendees and led the program. She introduced podium guests and recognized former 成人视频 presidents who were present for the ceremony: Dr. Christopher White, Dr. A. Frank Bonner and former Interim President Dr. Ben Leslie.

Vice President and University Chaplain for Christian Life and Service Dr. Josh Parrott offered the invocation. Dr. Aaron M. Rice, chair of the Department of Music, led the audience in singing the hymn: 鈥淗oly, Holy, Holy.鈥 Interim dean of the M. Christopher White School of Divinity Dr. Jim McConnell said the closing prayer.

Greetings were offered by Student Body President Andrea Stampone, Faculty Chair Dr. Cal Robertson, Vice President for Athletics Brendan Fahey, Big South Conference Commissioner Sherika Montgomery, a GWU alumna, and North Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities President A. Hope Williams.

Evans began his inaugural address with a spirit of thanksgiving. 鈥淔irst, I want to thank my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ鈥攏ot only for this opportunity鈥攂ut for each of you, and for this institution, this mission field we call 成人视频,鈥 he reflected.

He also expressed appreciation for his wife, Brittany, his parents and friends, Littlejohn and members of the Board of Trustees, faculty, staff, and students. He thanked Executive Assistant to the President Stephanie Stearns and the inauguration steering committee for their leadership in planning the program and celebration.

鈥淭oday is not about a ceremony or speeches or any one person. It is about a chapter in a much larger and enduring story, built on the faith, the sacrifice, and the shoulders of those who came before us,鈥 Evans affirmed. 鈥淎nd today, we are entrusted with carrying it forward. Gardner鈥慦ebb is, and will remain, a Christ鈥慶entered university. We will be focused in our priorities, disciplined in our decisions, and bold in our ambition.鈥

Evans also pointed to the University鈥檚 鈥淏ecome More鈥 vision as a guiding expression of its mission鈥攃alling students to grow in Christ, in knowledge, and in purpose. He emphasized that this shared purpose unites faculty, staff, students, alumni, and partners as 鈥淥ne Webb.鈥

The future of 成人视频 is bright, and I look forward to all that we will accomplish鈥攖ogether.鈥

As part of the ceremony, Evans was bestowed the President鈥檚 Medallion, which he will wear around his neck at commencements and other important ceremonial occasions. Finance Team Qualifies for Nationals and Business Student Places in Accounting

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥擲tudents from Gardner鈥慦ebb University鈥檚 Godbold College of Business recently earned top honors at the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) State Leadership Conference in Charlotte, N.C. A four-member finance team secured first place in the highly competitive Finance Case competition, earning a spot at the national conference this summer. In addition to the team victory, a freshman business student also placed in the accounting competition.

The students worked under the guidance of faculty advisors, Dr. RJ Quillinan, assistant professor of business law, and Dr. Angelina Smith, assistant professor of business.

Dr. RJ Quillinan

The Gardner鈥慦ebb finance team included Will Brooks of Earl, N.C., Demarqus Little of High Point, N.C., Kadeyn Marshall of Shelby, N.C., and William Stevenson of Durham, N.C. They outperformed 12 other teams to claim the title and advance to the FBLA National Leadership Conference scheduled for June in Las Vegas, Nev.

鈥淭he students spent hours pouring into the competition,鈥 Quillinan praised. 鈥淭hey prepared with a strong focus on providing analytical feedback to the judges, coupled with a presentation style that was smooth, personable, and consistent with the standards set forth within the Godbold College of Business.鈥

In individual competition, Alaena Locklear of Lawndale, N.C., placed sixth in Foundations of Accounting. The conference was a first for Locklear, and she鈥檚 already planning to attend next year.

鈥淭he comprehensive test I took contained questions about the basics and mechanics of financial statements, from what accounts belong on the Balance sheet to how the Statement of Cash Flows works,鈥 she recalled. 鈥淧reparation for the competition was a lot of coordination between myself and Dr. Smith, who guided me through the process. I took some time to study over what I’ve learned in my accounting classes so far, and I found a lot of that material relevant to what was on the test.鈥

Locklear added, 鈥淚 am very proud of everyone who participated. The Godbold College of Business has been instrumental in all of our successes, and I’d like to especially thank Drs. (Amber) Daniels, Smith, and Quillinan.鈥

Quillinan emphasized that FBLA plays a central role in bridging classroom learning with professional preparation. 鈥淥n campus, FBLA may be referred to as a 鈥榗lub,鈥 but it is more than that. It is an educational, co鈥慶urricular, academic program that allows for project鈥慴ased learning set in a competitive environment,鈥 he noted. 鈥淚n the case of the Finance Case competition, it helped students hone soft skills that we strive to provide in the Godbold College of Business, alongside the analytical and complex financial requirements to answer the question(s) posed.鈥

Marshall, a sophomore economics and finance major, explained the team鈥檚 preparation strategy. 鈥淚t was teamwork鈥攅veryone on our team had their roles,鈥 he shared. Outlining each member鈥檚 contribution, Marshall explained that he compiled the data, Brooks was the manager, Stevenson created the presentation and speech, and Little handled investment and money management.

He said the experience proved their abilities to succeed in a real-world scenario. He concluded, 鈥淚t feels amazing; it makes our long nights and late work hours worth it.鈥

The FBLA Finance Team: from left, Will Stevenson, Demarqus Little, Will Brooks, and Kadeyn Marshall

Stevenson, a junior economics and finance major, said the case required students to act as financial advisors for a marketing analyst. 鈥淲e managed his investments, set up bank accounts, made decisions for his day-to-day life, and saved for a down payment on a house,鈥 he described.

Echoing Marshall鈥檚 assessment, Stevenson said, 鈥淭he greatest skill was teamwork and encouragement. We all played different roles and when we needed help, we all pitched in.鈥

Quillinan added that the students did most of the preparation on their own. He and Smith helped them refine their presentation skills. He stated, 鈥淲e pointed out what may serve as differentiators against their competition: strength with the facts, providing more depth of analysis, and treating the presentation as a performance worthy of choreography and a personal touch.鈥

Stevenson summed up the experience as strengthening his financial knowledge and professional outlook. 鈥淭his competition will look great on my resume and gives me a chance to network and meet young professionals,鈥 he said. 鈥淭his group helped me grow my financial literacy.鈥

Quillinan commended the students鈥 dedication and teamwork. 鈥淚t was a lot of fun seeing these four come together, learn from one another, and use each team members鈥 strengths to ultimately win the competition,鈥 he reflected. 鈥淚 am proud to have been a coach to these four and look forward to doing so again, and again鈥攊f they let me.鈥

Grammy winning Artists Headline a Patriotic Program Celebrating American Composers, Veterans, and GWU鈥檚 New President Nate Evans

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥擨nfluenced early by American fiddle traditions and later shaped by classical and jazz training, Mark O鈥機onnor鈥檚 music reflects the full scope of America鈥檚 musical heritage. On April 27 at 7 p.m. in Dover Theatre, his unique musical talent comes to Gardner鈥慦ebb University as the GWU Orchestra presents 鈥淎merica at 250! A Celebration!鈥 The concert features O鈥機onnor and his wife, violinist Maggie O鈥機onnor, whose performances blend classical training with American roots traditions.

鈥淲e will honor 250 years of America by performing music by American composers with an American soloist, Mark O鈥機onnor,鈥 said Dr. Patricia Sparti, conductor of the Gardner Webb University Orchestra. 鈥淗e is the greatest jazz violinist, bluegrass fiddler and American musician of this generation. We will also honor veterans during the program.鈥

Tickets for 鈥淎merica at 250! A Celebration!鈥 are $15 and free for all students and Gardner鈥慦ebb faculty and staff.

Few living musicians embody the breadth, innovation and spirit of American music quite like Mark O鈥機onnor. Grammy鈥憌inning folk icon James Taylor once said of him, 鈥淭here鈥檚 something about that guy鈥檚 touch. I think he is to music what Muhammad Ali is to boxing.鈥 Yo鈥慪o Ma echoed that sentiment, praising both O鈥機onnor鈥檚 mastery and restless creativity: 鈥淏etween thought and execution there are no impediments, zero. But what really interests me is that this is a person in constant development, hungry to develop.鈥

Mark and Maggie O'Connor at the Grand Ole Opry
Mark and Maggie O’Connor playing at the Grand Ole Opry.

That hunger has shaped one of the most singular careers in American music history. A four鈥憈ime Grand Masters Champion, O鈥機onnor was only 13 years old when he became the youngest person ever to win the Grand Master Fiddler Championships, an all鈥慳ges competition. His record still stands atop more than four decades later. Additionally, he remains the only musician to have won national championships on fiddle, bluegrass guitar, and mandolin.

Also a three-time Grammy winner and eight-time CMA Artist of the Year, O鈥機onnor is one of the most in鈥慸emand session musicians in the country. He has recorded on more than 500 albums and collaborated with artists ranging from Dolly Parton and Paul Simon to Randy Travis and The Judds.

Yet O鈥機onnor鈥檚 influence reaches far beyond the recording studio. Drawing equally from folk traditions, jazz and classical training, he has forged what many critics call a new American classical music. His works鈥攊ncluding the bestselling 鈥淎ppalachia Waltz,鈥 co鈥憆ecorded with Yo鈥慪o Ma and Edgar Meyer, and 鈥淭he American Seasons鈥濃攁re now staples of orchestral repertoires worldwide. His 鈥淔iddle Concerto鈥 remains the most鈥憄erformed modern violin concerto of the last 50 years.

oconnor ccs orchestra day
Maggie and Mark O’Connor came to 成人视频 in 2024 for a Cleveland County Schools Orchestra day.

Maggie will share the stage with her husband. A violinist and vocalist, she is also a Grammy Award鈥憌inning artist whose career bridges classical virtuosity and American roots music with rare ease. Trained at the Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University and the Aspen Music Festival and School, Maggie brings both technical command and expressive depth to every performance. Critics have praised her as 鈥渇ormidable鈥 and 鈥渟oulful,鈥 noting her uncanny musical connection with her husband on stage.

Maggie has performed at the Grand Ole Opry, appeared at Carnegie Hall鈥檚 Zankel Hall, and collaborated with artists including Paul Simon, B茅la Fleck, Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. In addition to performing, she is an educator and co鈥慸irector of the O鈥機onnor Method String Camps, helping shape the next generation of American string players. A visual artist as well, Maggie draws inspiration from the intersection of music, nature and imagination鈥攁n influence that resonates through her artistry.

The April 27 program reflects the sweeping story of American music, past and present. Highlights include the finale of Dvo艡谩k鈥檚 鈥淣ew World Symphony,鈥 Gershwin selections from 鈥淧orgy and Bess鈥 (arranged by Robert Russell Bennett), Copland鈥檚 iconic 鈥淗oedown from Rodeo,鈥 and Elgar鈥檚 鈥淧omp and Circumstance No. 4,鈥 performed in honor of Gardner鈥慦ebb University鈥檚 new president, Nate Evans.

The program also features 鈥淔aith鈥 from O鈥機onnor鈥檚 groundbreaking 鈥淚mprovised Violin Concerto,鈥 with Mark O鈥機onnor as soloist, as well as 鈥淪trings and Threads,” a piece he composed. Both Mark and Maggie will perform violin, guitar, and vocals on Mark’s arrangement of Stevie Wonder鈥檚 鈥淟ove鈥檚 in Need of Love Today.”

Together, the evening serves as both a tribute and a celebration鈥攈onoring America鈥檚 musical heritage while showcasing artists who continue to expand its possibilities.

Following the concert, Mark and Maggie O鈥機onnor will sell CDs, DVDs, shirts and jewelry and will sign autographs and take photos with audience members.

Longtime Head Coach Reflects on Championships, Growth, and the Student-Athletes who Shaped the Runnin鈥 Bulldogs鈥 Success

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥敵扇耸悠 men鈥檚 tennis coach Mike Griffith reached a significant milestone in his tenure with the Runnin鈥 Bulldogs, recording his 200th career victory while being a member of the Big South Conference. The historic win came over Converse College on Feb. 28.

Griffith, who is retiring after 23 seasons at 成人视频, is recognized as the third winningest coach in the history of the Big South Conference. Having built one of the league鈥檚 most consistent and respected programs, he is a four-time Coach of the Year. As the program approaches its final season of competition, his impact will remain a lasting part of 成人视频 athletics history.

mike griffith mens tennis coach

Griffith became the head men鈥檚 tennis coach in 2003 during 成人视频鈥檚 first Division I season. The program competed in the A-Sun Conference until 2008, recording some wins before joining the Big South Conference in 2009.

鈥淚 will always remember the day I interviewed for the position with former AD Chuck Burch,鈥 Griffith reflected. 鈥淪o much activity was happening that day with so many athletic teams practicing. I knew right then I wanted to be at GWU and this was the perfect job for me. I was meant to be a coach.鈥

In 2019, 成人视频 claimed its first regular-season conference championship, finishing 7-1 in league play. 鈥淭he conference had the finest No. 1 players ever, with UNCA having an eventual Grand Slam winner at Wimbledon and the Australian Open,鈥 Griffith observed. 鈥淥ur No. 1 player, Maximilian Scholl, then went 20-1, and his only defeat was to the defending national champion from Wake Forest.鈥

Griffith also led the Runnin鈥 Bulldogs to back-to-back 20-win seasons for the first time in program history, compiling a 29-6 conference record over the past six seasons. The program captured its first-ever Big South Tournament Championship in 2025, earning an NCAA Tournament berth and capping a historic campaign.

The men's tennis team poses after winning the Big South Conference.

鈥淚 remember some of the wins, but what motivated me was the losses,鈥 Griffith shared. 鈥淚t drove me to get better and work harder. One of the hardest defeats we鈥檝e ever had was losing in the finals in 2024. The team and I worked hard to make sure that never would happen again, and thankfully we won it all in 2025.鈥

Under Griffith鈥檚 leadership, 成人视频 has consistently competed among the conference鈥檚 top teams, earning multiple postseason appearances and producing numerous All-Conference selections. His teams have been known for their depth, discipline, strong doubles play, and ability to close out matches on the singles courts.

This year鈥檚 team currently sits atop the Big South standings. 鈥淲e are 12-3 and need one more conference win to clinch the regular-season championship,鈥 Griffith said. 鈥淭his is a team and a group who will go their separate ways after this season. Their character and willpower motivate me, and my goal is to send them out as champions.鈥

A former standout at Winthrop, Griffith played in 1987 for Cid Carvalho, the second winningest coach in Big South Conference history.

Beyond wins and accolades, Griffith鈥檚 influence has extended far beyond the court. His players have consistently excelled academically while representing 成人视频 with pride throughout their collegiate careers.
